WoW Forever Professions and Camping

Professions in World of Warcraft: Forever work the way they do in Classic — fixed materials, fixed stats on what you make — with 600+ new recipes on top and one big new system around them: camping. Light a campfire, and everyone who stops can add an object from their profession and share the buffs.

From Blizzard’s Deep Dive panel recap for the system itself, and from Wowhead’s and Icy Veins’ beta guides, a developer interview and the beta client datamine for the details Blizzard hasn’t announced. Each of those is named where it is used. Last reviewed: .

What changes for professions in WoW Forever

Retail WoW rebuilt professions from the ground up in Dragonflight. Forever does not: Wowhead’s roundup of Blizzard’s panels says the profession system is the same as in WoW Classic, with fixed material requirements and crafted items that always have the same stats. What Forever adds is volume and reasons to use professions while you level, rather than a new crafting minigame.

Blizzard’s Deep Dive recap puts the headline number at 600+ new recipes across professions and level ranges, and says many existing recipes were reworked as well.

Recipes

600+ new recipes

Spread across the professions and the whole way from skill 1 to 300, so profession choice is meant to matter while leveling and not only at 60.

Food

Crafted food gives experience

Blizzard reworked food: almost all crafted food gives stats, plus a small experience bonus. The example shown at BlizzCon gave Intellect and 5% more experience from kills, and eating for 10 seconds granted a 15-minute Well Fed buff — one example, not a rule for every dish.

Starter zone

A free gathering profession

A quest at about level 3–4 rewards a choice of three manuals: Herbalism, Mining or Skinning. Per Wowhead’s roundup, the manual teaches you the profession if you don’t have it already and aren’t at two professions.

Camping

Professions go out into the world

The new camping system gives every profession something to place at a roadside camp: a buff, a workspace, or a utility that used to mean a trip back to town.

A community datamine of beta client build 1.60.1.69876 counts 12 primary and secondary professions, 961 recipe spell IDs that exist in neither Classic nor Season of Discovery, and 39 camping recipe variants. That counts spell records, not the recipes Blizzard counted, so it does not replace the 600+ figure.

How camping works in WoW Forever

Camping turns Cooking’s old Cooking Fire into a Basic Campfire. Put one down in the open world and you have made a campsite: a place where any player can rest and pick up vendors, repairs, tradeskill workspaces and buffs. Blizzard built it around chance meetings on the road — the player already camping there has made something useful for you, instead of competing with you for the next herb node.

Step 1

Light a campfire

Cooking’s Basic Campfire makes the campsite. Everything else attaches to it: camp objects have to be placed near a campfire.

Step 2

Sit down for 60 seconds

You don’t run through and collect. Sitting or crafting by the fire for a full minute makes you rested, and then you keep the camp’s buffs for 1 hour — Icy Veins puts the rest at exactly 60 seconds, and the client’s campfire tooltip says one minute.

Step 3

Everyone adds one object

A Basic Campfire holds 3 objects and each nearby player may contribute one, so filling a camp needs company. All camp objects share a 1-hour cooldown.

Watch out

A camp is temporary, and it isn’t a shelter

Blizzard estimates a campfire and its objects last around 10 minutes — separate from the 1-hour buffs you walked away with. And a camp protects nobody: in MMORPG.com’s interview, Josh Greenfield told of a tester who camped on the road in Duskwood, stepped away, and came back to find Stitches had killed her.

Where you can put a camp

  • Nearly anywhere in the open world, Wowhead’s roundup says — Icy Veins’ guide mentions beaches and streams as examples.
  • Not in cities, and not too close to another camp; Blizzard hasn’t given the minimum distance.
  • A buff tells you when there is already a camp nearby, per Icy Veins’ guide.
  • Whether camps work inside instances, survive their owner logging out, or can be shared across factions is all still untested.

Camping is not the only bedroll in Forever. Wowhead’s beta guide describes a hidden questline you can start at level 14 that ends in the Cozy Sleeping Bag, an item first seen in Season of Discovery: lie in it and you become rested and gain an experience bonus that stacks up to 3 times, on a 1-hour cooldown.

Camp objects by profession

Every profession has 3 camp objects, learned at different skill levels, and each of them carries that profession’s buff or utility no matter which one you place. Blizzard named a handful in its recap; the full list below is from Wowhead’s Camping Overview, written from the beta client, so treat it as beta data rather than an announcement.

  • Skill levels: the two professions Blizzard and Wowhead both showed in full, Alchemy and Blacksmithing, unlock their tiers at skill 20, 140 and 300. Campfires are their own track (below).
  • You can trade the objects, but you need the profession skill to place one. Anyone at the camp gets the buff, profession or not.
  • Crafting an object makes two of them, and placing one uses it up.
  • A higher tier replaces a lower one already at the camp: Blizzard’s example was a better sharpening stone going over a weaker one.
  • Blizzard has said advanced objects also come from Blueprint recipes that drop from specific dungeon bosses. It hasn’t said which — the nine new instances are on our WoW Forever dungeons page.

One conflict worth flagging: Blizzard’s recap and Icy Veins’ guide both say the Sharpening Wheel gives Attack Power, while Wowhead’s roundup and camping table say Strength. We follow Blizzard’s wording until the beta settles it.

Camp buffs don’t stack with class buffs

This is the rule that decides how much camping is worth to you. The camp buffs are variants of buffs classes already bring, and Blizzard says they do not stack with them. A camp fills the hole in a group that has no mage or no paladin; it does not pile a second buff on top of one you already have.

Camp buffs and the class buffs they replace
Camp objectBuffDoes not stack with
Incense Candle (Herbalism)IntellectArcane Intellect — Blizzard’s own example
Mana Well (Alchemy)Mana regenerationBlessing of Wisdom, per the beta client tooltip
Fish Bowl (Fishing)8% to all statsBlessing of Kings, per the beta client tooltip
Sharpening Wheel (Blacksmithing)Attack PowerBlizzard hasn’t named the buff it collides with
Faction Banner (Tailoring)SpiritBlizzard hasn’t named the buff it collides with

That makes camps most useful while leveling, in small groups, and in any party missing a buff class — which is also why Blizzard put the first objects at skill 20 rather than at 60.

Campfires: how big a camp can get

Cooks decide the size of the camp. Blizzard’s recap confirms upgraded campfires holding 5 or 10 objects instead of 3; the skill levels and materials below are from the beta client, through Wowhead’s guide.

The campfire itself is on a 5-minute cooldown in the beta client, separate from the 1-hour cooldown the camp objects share. In MMORPG.com’s interview Blizzard described the campfire as lasting 10 minutes on a one-hour cooldown, so this is one of the numbers the beta is likely to move.

How to start camping in WoW Forever

  1. Level 3–4

    Pick up a gathering profession

A starter-zone quest rewards a choice of Herbalism, Mining or Skinning manual, which teaches you the profession outright.

  2. Level 5

    The Great Outdoors

In the beta, a quest at about level 5 asks only that you /sit at the campfire in front of the quest giver, then sends you to town to learn Cooking and make your first Basic Campfire. Wowhead’s beta guide, not an announcement.

  3. Skill 20

    Your first camp object

Learned from the NPCs who introduce camping or from your profession trainer. In the beta each trained profession also hands you a short quest that teaches its tier 1 object.

  4. Skill 140 and 300

    The second and third objects

Stronger versions that can be placed over the weaker one, ending in the workspace objects — an Alchemy Laboratory, a Master Forge.

  5. Dungeons

    Blueprint recipes

Advanced objects come from Blueprints dropped by specific dungeon bosses. Blizzard hasn’t said which bosses.

Professions in the Legacy system

Forever’s account-wide progression rewards professions directly: you earn a Legacy point the first time you take each tradeskill to 150, 225 and 300. One of the three Legacy trees is Professions, and several perks across the trees change how camping and gathering feel.

  • Professions tree: a higher chance of a skill-up, and more Scarce materials from Mining, Herbalism and Skinning.
  • Supply crates: one Professions perk is about turning supply crates in to the Azeroth Commerce Authority or Durotar Supply and Logistics — the Season of Discovery factions, back under their own names.
  • Camping perks: Field Guide shortens the cooldown on adding camp objects, Permanence makes what you gain by resting at a camp last longer, and Reagent Economy makes tier 1 camp objects cost no reagents at all.
  • Every perk, its tree and what has actually been seen of it: WoW Forever Legacy system.

WoW Forever professions and camping FAQ

Are professions changed in WoW Forever?

Not structurally. Wowhead’s roundup of Blizzard’s panels says the profession system is the same as in WoW Classic — fixed materials, fixed stats on what you craft — and that the Dragonflight overhaul is not coming to Forever. What is new is 600+ recipes, reworked food and the camping system.

How many new recipes are in WoW Forever?

More than 600 across all professions and level ranges, Blizzard says, and many existing recipes were reworked too. The recipe lists themselves haven’t been published.

What is camping in WoW Forever?

A new open-world system built on Cooking’s campfire. Placing a Basic Campfire creates a campsite where players rest and gain vendors, repairs, tradeskill workspaces and buffs, and where each player can add one object from their own profession.

Is camping a profession in WoW Forever?

No. Wowhead’s guide describes it as a crafting system that sits alongside your professions rather than taking one of your slots; every profession makes camp objects for it.

How do you get the camp buffs?

Sit or craft by the campfire. Icy Veins puts the rest at 60 seconds and the client’s campfire tooltip says one minute; once you are rested, the camp’s buffs last 1 hour.

How many objects can a campfire hold?

A Basic Campfire holds 3, and each nearby player may add only one. Cooks can make upgraded campfires holding 5 and 10.

Do camp buffs stack with class buffs?

No. Blizzard says the camp buffs are the same as various class buffs and cannot be stacked — you cannot have both an Incense Candle’s Intellect and a mage’s Arcane Intellect. That is what makes camps useful to groups missing a buff class.

How long does a campsite last?

Around 10 minutes by Blizzard’s own estimate, which is separate from the 1-hour buffs you take away with you. The beta client also shows a 5-minute cooldown on the Basic Campfire itself.

Where can you place a campfire in WoW Forever?

Nearly anywhere in the open world, but not in cities and not too close to another camp. Blizzard hasn’t given the minimum distance; Icy Veins reports a buff that tells you a camp is already nearby.

At what skill do you learn camp objects?

Skill 20 for the first one, from a camping NPC or your profession trainer. In the beta, Alchemy and Blacksmithing unlock their three objects at skill 20, 140 and 300.

Where do Blueprint recipes drop?

From specific dungeon bosses, Blizzard says, without naming them. The instances themselves are listed on our WoW Forever dungeons page.

Does crafted food give experience in WoW Forever?

Yes. Blizzard reworked food so almost all crafted food gives stats plus a small experience bonus; the BlizzCon example gave Intellect and 5% more experience from kills, with a 15-minute Well Fed buff after eating for 10 seconds.

How do you get a free profession in WoW Forever?

A quest around level 3–4 in the starter zones rewards a choice of Herbalism, Mining or Skinning manual, which teaches the profession if you don’t have it and aren’t already at two.

Do professions give Legacy points?

Yes — one the first time each tradeskill reaches 150, 225 and 300. The Professions tree then spends them on things like skill-up chance and extra Scarce materials: see the WoW Forever Legacy system.

Are there crafting orders or work orders in WoW Forever?

Nothing points to them. The beta client’s profession data has no record of a crafting order, work order or artisan writ system, and Blizzard’s line is that Forever keeps the Classic profession system rather than the Dragonflight one.

Still unconfirmed

  • The final recipe lists (each profession page lists the beta client’s new recipes), where to learn them and the profession skill caps
  • All three camp objects for every profession, and the exact values of their buffs
  • Whether the camp object skill levels in the beta client (20, 140 and 300 for most professions) stay the same at launch
  • Which dungeon bosses drop Blueprint recipes
  • The minimum distance between camps, and whether camps work inside instances or across factions
  • How long a camp really lasts, and how the shared one-hour cooldown behaves when an object is replaced
  • Which campsite vendors and services exist, and how they are unlocked
  • An “artisan writ” or crafting-order system: a player report we could not confirm. There is no such record in the beta client’s profession data, so we have left it off this page
  • Caps on gathered materials, or nodes respawning faster the more players are nearby: player reports with no official or client-side source behind them
