WoW Forever PvP

PvP in WoW Forever keeps the original battlegrounds, adds a new 15v15 battleground called the Darkspear Islands, and swaps rated PvP for an honor track that runs up to rank 14 and starts over each season. This guide separates what Blizzard has said from what players found in the beta client, which can still change.

Compiled from Blizzard's What's Next panel, its recap and roadmap, the Deep Dive recap, the September 17 Live Q&A (from Wowhead's transcript) and developer interviews. Tables and numbers marked as beta client data were read from the Forever beta client (1.60.1.69893) and a community datamine; Blizzard hasn't announced them. Last reviewed: .

  • A PvP track instead of ratings. In the September 17 Live Q&A, Blizzard said it wants to invest in PvP, that Forever won’t have rated PvP, and that a new PvP progression track takes its place and resets every season or tier. A tier is a round of raids; the first is on the WoW Forever raids page.
  • Honor moves you up the ranks. Tim Jones, in Kotaku’s BlizzCon interview: when you fight players in battlegrounds, finish battlegrounds and complete PvP-related content, you gain honor, and that honor moves you through a ranking system. Within a season or patch cycle you can reach rank 14, with cosmetic rewards and PvP armor that has stats. He didn’t say what happens to your rank or rewards when a season ends.
  • AV AFK won’t be the best honor. Blizzard said in the same Live Q&A that it is adjusting honor gains so that sitting in Alterac Valley isn’t the most rewarding way to earn it.
  • A new battleground with a new reputation. The Live Q&A mentioned one new battleground that comes with a new reputation; the panel named it the Darkspear Islands. Kotaku quotes Jones on “new battlegrounds like the Darkspear Islands”, which Wowhead read as a hint that there could be more than one, but the Darkspear Islands are the only one Blizzard has named.
  • PvP seasons on the roadmap. Blizzard’s 2026–2027 roadmap lists a PvP Season Refresh in both the spring and the summer major updates.

Darkspear Islands: the new 15v15 battleground

The Darkspear Islands lie off the coast of Kalimdor. On the What’s Next panel, Blizzard said the battleground follows the same rule set as Eye of the Storm: you win by controlling strategic positions across the islands. The twist is Arathi Basin-style capture points, where you interact with a flag and then stand guard to secure the spot. The Horde fights alongside the Darkspear trolls to drive the Alliance off their islands; the Alliance reports to the Theramore Expeditionary Force.

What the beta client adds

  • Levels 30–60. In the beta client, the Darkspear Islands queue is open from level 30 to 60, with up to 15 players per side and whole groups of 15 allowed.
  • Objectives. The beta client lists three: capture and hold objectives, capture the Darkspear relic, and earn 1500 resources. Its scoreboard counts flag captures, bases assaulted and bases defended.
  • Flag runs. A beta client spell reads “You are holding the Darkspear Flag”, to be taken to any controlled point for Victory Points, much like the flag in Eye of the Storm.
  • Where it is. The beta client’s description places the islands off the coast of Durotar, where the Alliance is trying to gain a foothold.

Darkspear Raiders and Theramore Expeditionary Force reputations

Both sides of the battleground are new reputations in the beta client: the Darkspear Raiders for the Horde and the Theramore Expeditionary Force for the Alliance, which fits the new reputation Blizzard mentioned in the Live Q&A. A community datamine of the beta client found 44 reward variants across the two, mostly the same item at several item levels. How you earn the reputation and what the rewards cost isn’t known yet.

WoW Forever battlegrounds and queues

Blizzard said on the panel that you’ll still fight in the classic battlegrounds you already know, and Tim Jones told Kotaku the new ones supplement the original battlegrounds. In the September 17 Live Q&A it added that you play with players on your own ruleset, except in battlegrounds, which are shared across rulesets. It didn’t say whether you can queue with a friend on another ruleset.

The table below is the beta client’s queue records. Two things stand out: Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin can start with fewer players per side than in Classic Era, and there are two new random queues. Blizzard hasn’t explained either.

Battleground queues in the beta client 1.60.1.69893 (datamined, can change)
BattlegroundLevelsPlayers per sideLargest groupNotes
Warsong Gulch10–601–1010Minimum per side lowered from 5 in Classic Era.
Arathi Basin20–601–1515Minimum per side lowered from 8 in Classic Era.

Darkspear Islands30–601–1515New; announced as 15v15.
Random Battleground10–605–105A new client record covering Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin and the Darkspear Islands. Not announced.
Random Epic Battleground10–605–105A new client record with no battleground attached yet. Not announced.

Whether Alterac Valley itself changed (its map, objectives or win conditions) isn’t known; only its queue record matches Classic Era. The one announced change is to honor, so that sitting in the battleground isn’t the best way to earn it.

WoW Forever honor ranks and Rank Points

Blizzard has described the system in one sentence: honor from battlegrounds and PvP content moves you up to rank 14 within a season. The beta client is more detailed, and slightly different. It has two currencies:

  • Honor Points, earned by killing players of the opposite faction and spent on special items. The beta client caps how many you can hold at 15,000; that is not a weekly cap.
  • Rank Points, earned from tasks given out in Gadgetzan and from battlegrounds. They raise your PvP rank, and each rank unlocks items to buy in the Champion’s Hall in Stormwind or the Hall of Legends in Orgrimmar.

So in the client, ranks come from Rank Points, while Jones spoke of honor. Until Blizzard explains the system, treat the split as beta client data that may still change.

The titles are the same as in the original game; whether you can earn and display them in Forever hasn’t been confirmed. The beta client also has 26 new PvP armor sets named after the original ranks (Champion’s, Lieutenant Commander’s, Warlord’s, Field Marshal’s and so on). Wowhead’s Deep Dive liveblog reports that PvP gear appearances still need the matching rank for transmog.

Weekly rank cap

The beta client has a line that reads “Each week, the Rank Points cap is increased, up to a maximum of … for Rank …”, and a curve for the highest rank each week allows. If it holds, nobody reaches rank 14 before week 10 of a season, however much they play. The client gives no calendar dates.

The WoW Forever Legacy system also rewards PvP: the Legacy challenges shown at BlizzCon include reaching PvP ranks and weekly Field of Honor goals, and the For Great Honor perk raises honor gains.

PvP rulesets and world PvP

  • World PvP is a ruleset choice. Forever has no realms: you pick a ruleset. On Normal, you only fight other players when both sides agree; on the PvP ruleset you can be attacked in contested territory. How rulesets replace realms is on the WoW Forever servers page.
  • One faction per player on the PvP ruleset. In an interview with Game Informer, Blizzard said players on a PvP ruleset pick one faction; on the other rulesets you can have characters on both sides.
  • Faction balance. Blizzard’s Deep Dive recap says the PvP ruleset gets systems to support Horde and Alliance balance, similar to the approach from Season of Discovery. It hasn’t said how they work.
  • Battlegrounds mix rulesets. Per the Live Q&A, battlegrounds are shared across rulesets, so Normal and PvP players meet there.
  • Hardcore. On the Hardcore panel, Blizzard said PvP Legacy challenges can’t be done on Hardcore, so that ruleset gets Hardcore-only challenges instead when it opens after launch.

Unannounced PvP records in the beta client

These are records players found in the beta client. Blizzard hasn’t announced any of them, and a record in the client doesn’t mean a feature is coming.

  • Battle for Gilneas. A battleground map and queue record with no level range set. The datamine’s author says it isn’t evidence of a release plan.
  • Mak’gora Arena. An arena-type queue record for levels 1–60 with up to 5 players per side, on a map called Hyjal Crater. On the Hardcore panel, Blizzard teased that Mak’gora duels might one day get a dedicated place, with no date; the record doesn’t mention Hardcore or duels, and 5 per side doesn’t match a one-on-one duel. There is no arena mode announced for Forever.
  • Battle for Blackrock. A queue with placeholder text carried over from older game data, not a new Forever battleground.
  • Warsong Gulch (Winter). A map record with no announcement behind it.

WoW Forever PvP FAQ

Does WoW Forever have rated PvP or arenas?

No rated PvP. In the September 17 Live Q&A, Blizzard said a new PvP progression track replaces it, resetting every season or tier. No arena mode has been announced; the beta client only has an unannounced Mak’gora Arena record.

How do honor ranks work in WoW Forever?

Blizzard says honor from battlegrounds and PvP content moves you through 14 ranks, and rank 14 is reachable within a season or patch cycle. The beta client splits it into Honor Points (from killing players, spent on items) and Rank Points (from battlegrounds and Gadgetzan tasks, which raise your rank).

Do PvP ranks reset?

Blizzard said in the Live Q&A that the PvP progression track resets every season or tier, and its roadmap has a PvP Season Refresh in the spring and summer updates. It hasn’t said whether you keep rewards or titles after a reset.

How long does it take to reach rank 14?

Blizzard only says it is reachable within a season or patch cycle. The beta client raises the highest rank you can reach each week, and its curve first allows rank 14 in week 10. That is beta client data and can change.

What is the Darkspear Islands battleground?

A new 15v15 battleground off the coast of Kalimdor, played by Eye of the Storm rules with Arathi Basin-style capture points. The Horde fights with the Darkspear trolls (the Darkspear Raiders in the beta client), the Alliance with the Theramore Expeditionary Force. In the beta client its queue is for levels 30–60.

Are the original battlegrounds in WoW Forever?

Yes. Blizzard said on the panel that you’ll still fight in the classic battlegrounds, and the beta client has queues for Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin and Alterac Valley.

Are battlegrounds cross-ruleset?

Yes. In the September 17 Live Q&A, Blizzard said battlegrounds are shared across rulesets. It didn’t say whether you can queue as a group with a friend on another ruleset.

Is AV AFK farming still the best honor?

Blizzard said in the Live Q&A that it is adjusting honor gains so that sitting in Alterac Valley isn’t the best way to earn honor. It hasn’t given numbers.

Can I play Horde and Alliance on the PvP ruleset?

No. In an interview with Game Informer, Blizzard said players on the PvP ruleset pick one faction; the other rulesets allow characters on both sides.

Is there a new battleground in Gilneas?

Not announced. The beta client has a Battle for Gilneas record with no level range, and the datamine’s author says it isn’t evidence of a release plan.

Can I get PvP gear with stats?

Yes. Tim Jones said the rank rewards include PvP armor with stats as well as cosmetics. The beta client’s rank screen lists elite armor upgrades from rank 8 up, a black war mount at 11 and a weapon arsenal at 14.

Still unconfirmed

  • Whether ranks, titles and rewards are kept when a season resets
  • How honor and the client’s Rank Points relate to each other
  • The weekly rank cap, rank rewards and their prices (beta client data only)
  • How the Darkspear reputations are earned and what their rewards cost
  • Whether groups can queue for battlegrounds across rulesets
  • Whether Alterac Valley changed beyond how honor is earned
  • Any battleground or arena besides the Darkspear Islands
  • How faction balance works on the PvP ruleset
