WoW Forever Servers and Rulesets

World of Warcraft: Forever has no realm list. Instead of picking a server, you pick a ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplay, or Hardcore once it opens after launch), and you play in one large shared world with everyone in your region who picked the same one. This page covers how that works, from Blizzard's Deep Dive panel recap.

Everything here comes from Blizzard's Deep Dive panel (the video and the written recap) unless marked otherwise, and can change before launch on November 4. Last reviewed: .

The four WoW Forever rulesets

A ruleset replaces the realm type you used to read next to each server name. You choose one at character creation, and it decides who you meet in the world and who you can group with. On the panel, Blizzard called the lineup very similar to the current Classic offerings.

How playing without realms works

Blizzard's reason is the realm choice itself: pick the right realm and you have your friends and a community, pick another and you might find out too late that everyone you wanted to play with is somewhere else. Forever moves that decision out of the way.

On the panel, Blizzard's Ana Resendez put it this way: think about each ruleset like a mega realm. Improvements to the server technology let one realm hold far more players than Classic could in 2004, but Blizzard is not putting everyone in one giant realm. You can quest, run dungeons and raid with anyone on the same ruleset. You cannot group across rulesets, and factions stay separate, so Horde and Alliance players still cannot group together.

To keep a sense of community at that size, the servers track who you meet: you should keep crossing paths with the same players while leveling, and run into your guild mates out in the world before you have even grouped up. In an interview with IGN, lead game designer Tim Jones described seeing someone in Elwynn Forest and meeting the same player again thirty levels later in Desolace.

The Hardcore ruleset

  • Not at launch. The ruleset screen tags Hardcore “Arriving later”, and Blizzard says it opens after launch; it earlier placed Hardcore in the winter.
  • Closed off. Hardcore is a fully enclosed ecosystem: its players only meet and group with other Hardcore players.
  • Permanent death, then a second life elsewhere. Death on Hardcore is permanent, but a dead character may transfer to another ruleset to be resurrected. PvP is included, which Blizzard pointed out is a first.
  • One-way progress. Progress, collections and rewards earned in Hardcore can carry over to the other rulesets, but progress from the other rulesets does not flow into Hardcore.

Names, languages and faction balance

  • Two-part names. Every character has a first and a last name, like “Ana Forever”. Names are unique across your whole region rather than per realm, which leaves more room for original names.
  • Early name reservation. From October 27 to November 3, 2026 (PST), anyone with a Forever upgrade purchase can create up to 3 characters and reserve their names, first come, first served.
  • Preferred language. You set a preferred online language, and the game leans toward putting you with players who share it. In the settings screen Blizzard showed, it is an account setting for your region, applies to all your characters, and has a 1-day cooldown on changes.
  • Faction balance on PvP. The PvP ruleset gets systems to support Horde and Alliance balance, similar to the approach from Season of Discovery.

WoW Forever servers FAQ

Does WoW Forever have realms?

No. Forever is realmless: you choose a ruleset (Normal, PvP, Roleplay or, after launch, Hardcore) instead of a server from a list.

Which server should I pick in WoW Forever?

Pick the ruleset that fits how you want to play: Normal for PvP only by agreement, PvP for open world PvP, Roleplay for playing in character, or Hardcore once it opens. To play with friends, pick the same ruleset and faction.

Is WoW Forever one giant megaserver?

Each ruleset is, in Blizzard's words, like a mega realm, but not everyone is in one giant realm: players on different rulesets never meet, factions stay apart, and the servers try to bring you back to players and guild mates you already know. Blizzard hasn't explained how busy zones are split up.

Where are WoW Forever servers located? Are there EU or OCE servers?

Blizzard hasn't listed server regions or data centers yet. What it has said is that names are unique per region and that language preference is set per region; the settings screen it showed offers English, LatAm Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese.

Can I play with friends on a different ruleset?

No. Blizzard says cross-ruleset grouping is not supported, and Horde and Alliance still can't group.

Can my realm die or get too crowded?

That is the problem Blizzard says it is solving: picking the right launch realm, and choosing between long queues on a popular realm and a small community on a quiet one. With no separate realms inside a ruleset, there is no low-population realm to end up on.

Will there be login queues at launch?

Blizzard hasn't said. It describes the realmless setup as a way to lessen the tradeoff between long queues and lasting communities, but it hasn't given any capacity numbers.

Can I move my character to another ruleset?

Only one case has been announced: a Hardcore character that dies can move to another ruleset, PvP included. Blizzard hasn't mentioned transfers between Normal, PvP and Roleplay.

Is there a Roleplay PvP ruleset?

Not in what Blizzard has shown. It lists four rulesets: Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Hardcore.

Does WoW Forever have War Mode?

Blizzard hasn't said so directly. Forever handles world PvP through the PvP ruleset instead, which Wowhead's panel liveblog read as a sign that retail's War Mode isn't coming.

Is Hardcore available at launch?

No. The ruleset screen shows Hardcore tagged “Arriving later”, and Blizzard says it opens after launch; it earlier said winter.

What happens when my Hardcore character dies?

Death on Hardcore is permanent, but the character may transfer to another ruleset to be resurrected, PvP included. Progress from Hardcore carries over; nothing from the other rulesets flows back into Hardcore.

Can I reserve my character name?

Yes, with any Forever upgrade purchase: from October 27 to November 3, 2026 (PST), up to 3 characters, first come, first served.

Can I change my language preference?

Yes. In Blizzard's screenshot it is an account setting for your region that applies to all your characters, and changing it has a 1-day cooldown.

Still unconfirmed

  • Server regions and data centers, including Oceania
  • Whether characters can move between rulesets other than after a Hardcore death
  • PvP rules on the Roleplay ruleset
  • The date Hardcore opens
  • Launch queues and how many players a ruleset holds
  • Whether the language options differ by region
