WoW Forever Hardcore

Hardcore is the ruleset in World of Warcraft: Forever with one life per character, and a way out for characters that die. It isn’t in the beta or at launch. On the Hardcore panel at BlizzCon, Blizzard said “we won’t have it at launch, but soon”, and its roadmap puts it in the winter after launch.

Compiled from Blizzard’s Hardcore panel (“Go Again!”, the full video), the Deep Dive panel and recap and the roadmap; anything else names its source in the sentence. Hardcore isn’t playable yet, so all of this can change before it opens. Last reviewed: .

How Hardcore works in WoW Forever

One life

Death is permanent

A character that dies stays dead on the Hardcore ruleset. The ruleset card reads: “This challenging ruleset features permanent player character death.”

Way out

Move to any other ruleset

A dead character can transfer to Normal, PvP or Roleplay and be resurrected there. In Classic Hardcore the only way out was a PvE realm.

Closed

A world of its own

Hardcore is a fully enclosed ecosystem: you meet, group, run dungeons and raid only with other Hardcore players.

One way

Progress flows out

What you earn on Hardcore goes with you to the other rulesets, but mounts, pets, Legacy Points and collections from the other rulesets don’t come in.

Normal is Forever’s name for what Classic players call PvE. Horde and Alliance still can’t group on any ruleset. How rulesets replace realms, and what they share: WoW Forever servers.

What changes from Classic Hardcore

Safety

A warning before the world refreshes

When too many or too few players are around you, the game rebuilds the world, and creatures can respawn all at once. Forever warns you first and lets you move when you’re safe. More below.

Transfers

A dead character can go PvP

Classic Hardcore characters could only move to a PvE realm after death. In Forever they can pick PvP, Normal or Roleplay, and Blizzard expects players who like the tension to take PvP.

Legacy

Every run leaves something behind

Legacy Points are account-wide, so a character that reaches level 25 and dies at 26 still earns its class’s level 25 point for your next run. Blizzard compared it to a roguelike.

Unsolved

Routes to learn again

New zones and quests, new rare spawns with drops of their own, new world drops, 600+ new recipes, better dungeon drops and camping buffs: the routes Hardcore players know by heart may no longer be the best ones.

On the panel, Blizzard added that it will keep adding content at every level range, not only at the level cap, update after update, so there will be new things to master on the way from 1 to 60.

The world refresh warning

Principal game designer Kris Zierhut told the Hardcore panel about a Classic Hardcore duo run in Loch Modan on a crowded Saturday morning: the players around him changed, every Trogg in the hills respawned at once, and he had to run for it. That happens when the game refreshes the world because there are too many or too few players in your area.

In Forever, a window warns you before the refresh with a countdown of 3 minutes, so you can get somewhere safe, and a button lets you say you’re safe and move now. Blizzard built it for Hardcore, but every player gets it, and it is being tested in the beta.

According to Wowhead, which wrote it up from the beta, the notice has a “Refresh Now” button; “Okay” hides it and leaves an arrow with the time left by the chat box. After the move, the new copy of the zone can have every mob alive, quest mobs and loot gone, or extra herb and mining nodes. Wowhead gives the countdown as 5 minutes, not 3, so the length may have changed since BlizzCon.

Hardcore and the Legacy system

  • Points count even when you die. Legacy challenges pay out as you reach them, so a Hardcore character that never makes it to 60 still adds to your account.
  • Hardcore-only challenges. Several Legacy challenges are about PvP, which you can’t really do on Hardcore, so Blizzard plans a set of Hardcore-specific challenges for when the ruleset opens.
  • Maybe Hardcore perks later. Blizzard said it is thinking about adding more Hardcore challenges and new, Hardcore-specific ways to earn perks in the future.
  • Nothing comes in. Legacy Points, mounts and pets from the other rulesets don’t count on Hardcore, which keeps its progression separate; what you earn there goes with you when you transfer out.

Mak’gora in WoW Forever

Mak’gora is Classic Hardcore’s duel to the death: the loser’s character is gone for good. At the very end of the Hardcore panel, senior game designer Josh Greenfield gave what he called a tiny tease: a dedicated space for Mak’gora contests “could be something we’re working on for a future update. Maybe.” He didn’t show it or give a date.

A community datamining site that reads the beta client’s files lists an unannounced queue entry named “Mak’gora Arena” for levels 1 to 60, with up to five players a side, on a map called Hyjal Crater. Nothing in it mentions Hardcore or duels, and five a side doesn’t fit a one-on-one duel, so it may be something else.

When Hardcore arrives

  1. Sep 17 – Oct 21, 2026

    Beta

No Hardcore ruleset; the world refresh warning is tested.

  2. Nov 4, 2026

    Launch

With the Normal, PvP and Roleplay rulesets. Hardcore shows on the ruleset screen as “Arriving later”.

  3. Winter

    Hardcore opens

    With Hardcore-only Legacy challenges.

  4. Later

    More for Hardcore

Maybe Hardcore Legacy perks, and maybe a space for Mak’gora.

WoW Forever Hardcore FAQ

Is Hardcore available when WoW Forever launches?

No. Forever launches November 4, 2026 with the Normal, PvP and Roleplay rulesets. On the Hardcore panel Blizzard said “we won’t have it at launch, but soon”.

When does WoW Forever Hardcore come out?

Blizzard’s roadmap places it in the winter after launch. There is no exact date yet.

Is Hardcore in the WoW Forever beta?

No. The beta runs Sep 17 to Oct 21 without the Hardcore ruleset. The world refresh warning built for Hardcore is in the beta, though.

What happens when you die in WoW Forever Hardcore?

The character stays dead on Hardcore, but you can transfer it to Normal, PvP or Roleplay, where it’s resurrected and plays on. It keeps what it earned.

Can a dead Hardcore character go to a PvP ruleset?

Yes. Blizzard called this a first: in Classic Hardcore the only choice was a PvE realm.

Do my mounts and Legacy Points carry into Hardcore?

No. Mounts, pets, Legacy Points and other collections from the other rulesets don’t come into Hardcore, but what you earn on Hardcore does count on the other rulesets.

Do I get Legacy Points if my Hardcore character dies?

Yes, for the challenges it completed before it died. Blizzard’s example: reach level 25 on a class and die at 26, and you still earn the Legacy point for level 25.

Can Hardcore players group with Normal players?

No. You can only group, run dungeons and raid with players on your own ruleset.

Is Hardcore a separate server?

Forever has no realms to choose. Hardcore is one of the rulesets, next to Normal, PvP and Roleplay, and each ruleset works as its own large community.

What is the world refresh warning?

A countdown before the game moves you to a refreshed copy of the world, so creatures don’t suddenly respawn on top of you. You can move early once you’re safe. The Hardcore panel said 3 minutes; Wowhead, writing from the beta, says 5.

Will WoW Forever have Mak’gora?

Blizzard teased a dedicated space for Mak’gora duels, “maybe” in a future update, and gave no date.

Is Forever Hardcore harder than Classic Hardcore?

Blizzard hasn’t described it that way. The rules are the same one-life rules; what changes is the world, with new zones, quests, rare spawns and drops, so what players learned in Classic doesn’t all carry over.
