Blacksmithing in WoW Forever

Blacksmithing in Forever works as it does in Classic — fixed materials, fixed stats — with a camp object line that starts with a Sharpening Wheel at skill 20 and ends with a Master Forge at 300.

What Blacksmithing does in WoW Forever

Blacksmithing is one of the two professions whose whole camp line has been shown, by Blizzard’s panel and Wowhead’s guide alike: a Sharpening Wheel at 20, an Anvil at 140, a Master Forge at 300. It is also Blizzard’s example of a stronger object replacing a weaker one already at the camp — a better sharpening stone over a worse one.

Blizzard’s recap and Icy Veins said the Sharpening Wheel raises Attack Power; the beta client (build 1.60.1.70755) says Strength, exclusive with Strength of Earth Totem, as in the table below.

How this route is worked out
  • Skill ranges are the client’s: the skill where a recipe turns yellow and where it turns grey. The client doesn’t hold the skill a trainer asks before teaching a recipe, so a trainer recipe only counts from the skill where it turns yellow, unless the client gives a lower one. Recipes you learn with the profession count from the start, recipe items from the skill the item asks for.
  • Crafts per step use the Classic skill-up chance: every craft gives a point while the recipe is orange, then the chance falls from 100% at yellow to 0% at grey, (grey − skill) ÷ (grey − yellow). The expected crafts of each point are added up and rounded up; an unlucky run takes a few more.
  • Which recipe: at every skill point the route compares the recipes that still give skill-ups by the client’s base price of their materials times the crafts they take, and changing recipe counts as 3 extra crafts so the steps stay few. A recipe you learn from a recipe item counts at 5 times its value, so the route only takes one where it’s that much cheaper than the trainer’s recipes or where no trainer recipe gives skill-ups. The base price is a yardstick, not what you’ll pay.
  • Trainer means no item in the client teaches the recipe. The trainer’s list itself is server data and isn’t in the client, and the client marks a specialization (Armorsmith, Dragonscale, Gnomish and the rest) only on some recipe items and the devices they make, so check a step’s recipe with your trainer.
  • Left out: recipes with a cooldown and those that need a material only such a recipe makes (Mooncloth, Arcanite Bar), recipes the client ties to one faction or one specialization, taught by an item the client has no data for, camp objects and the Season of Discovery recipes the client still carries.
  • Materials: what one step makes and a later step takes is counted once. A material your profession can make itself is listed as it is, with the recipe that makes it; making it can give skill-ups the route doesn’t count, so you may finish early.

Where the new Blacksmithing recipes fit, skill 1 to 300

The new recipes on the skill bands of the four training ranks, each placed at the skill where the client turns it yellow. Below that skill a recipe is orange or yellow and gives skill-ups; at grey it stops. Use it to see which band has something new to level with; the route between them is still the Classic one.

Blacksmithing recipes in the beta client

Every Blacksmithing recipe in beta client 1.60.1.70755: 438 recipes, 194 of them new in Forever. Filter by category, search a recipe or a reagent, and read the skill colors left to right: learnable, yellow, green, grey.

Plate and mail armor make up most of the list, with a few weapons from fist weapons and daggers to polearms and thrown weapons.

Some new recipes only turn yellow at skill 320, above Classic’s cap of 300. Blizzard hasn’t announced Forever’s skill cap.

Client data, not Blizzard’s list: a recipe in the files can change or never ship, and where a recipe item drops or is sold isn’t in the client. Blizzard counts 600+ new recipes across all professions; this count leaves out camp objects, so the two don’t have to match. 45 Season of Discovery recipes are still in the beta client but not confirmed for Forever; switch them on to see them.

Blacksmithing in the Legacy system

Forever’s account-wide Legacy system gives a Legacy Point the first time you take a crafting profession to 150, 225 and 300 skill, so Blacksmithing alone is worth three. These perks touch it (first rank, as seen in the demo):

  • Working Overtime (Professions tree): 4% higher chance of a skill-up from primary, secondary and class tradeskills.
  • Dedicated Study (Professions tree): Raises your lowest primary or secondary tradeskill by 1. Once both primary tradeskills and all three secondary ones reach 300, it gives 2 to 4 of a random Elemental Essence instead. 25 sec cast, 23 hr cooldown.
  • Reagent Economy (Resourcefulness tree): Class abilities no longer need reagents bought from vendors, and Tier 1 camping features cost no reagents to craft.
  • Field Guide (Adventure tree): The cooldown for adding camping features is 8% shorter.
  • Permanence (Resourcefulness tree): Your long-duration party and raid buffs, and the benefits of resting at a camp, last 50% longer.
