WoW Forever System Requirements
Blizzard lists minimum and recommended specs for World of Warcraft: Forever on its Battle.net shop page, one set for Windows and one for Mac. Both tiers need a solid state drive with 128 GB free. Here are the full lists, what the chip names mean, how Forever compares with Midnight, and what players report for the beta install size.
Specs are from Blizzard’s Battle.net shop page, archived on September 13 and unchanged when we checked again. Install sizes are player reports. Blizzard can change the specs before launch on November 4. Last reviewed: .

| Input | Keyboard and mouse | Multi-button mouse with scroll wheel |
| Resolution | 1280 × 720 minimum | 1280 × 720 minimum |
Blizzard’s list names each chip family one after another; the “or” between them is ours, and the trademark signs are left out.
Mac system requirements
Mac is an official platform for World of Warcraft: Forever. The Battle.net shop page lists it next to Windows, with its own minimum and recommended specs.
| Minimum | Recommended | |
|---|---|---|
| Operating system | macOS 12 | macOS 15 |
| Processor | Apple M2 or 9th generation Intel Core (Coffee Lake) | Apple M4 |
| Graphics | Metal capable, 4 GB: Apple M2 (8 GB) | Apple M4 (16 GB) |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM |
| Storage | SSD with 128 GB available space | SSD with 128 GB available space |
| Input | Keyboard and mouse | Multi-button mouse with scroll wheel |
- Apple silicon: the lowest Apple chip on the list is the M2 with 8 GB. The M1 isn’t named.
- Intel Macs: the processor line allows a 9th generation Intel Core (Coffee Lake), and the graphics line asks for a Metal capable 4 GB GPU but names only the Apple M2. Midnight’s list on the same page also names AMD RDNA 1 (4 GB); Forever’s doesn’t.
- Internet and resolution are the same as on Windows: broadband and at least 1280 × 720.
How to read the specs
- An SSD is required on both tiers. Even the minimum asks for a solid state drive with 128 GB free; a hard drive isn’t on either list.
- Video memory counts. The minimum asks for 4 GB on a DirectX 12 card and the recommended for 8 GB, so check the memory of your card, not only its series.
- Windows 10 is enough for the minimum if it is 64-bit and has the May 2019 Update or newer. The recommended specs move to Windows 11.
- Laptops are on the list. The Windows minimum names the integrated graphics of Intel’s Lunar Lake laptop processors, and the Mac minimum is an M2 with 8 GB.
| Name on the list | What that is |
|---|---|
| Intel Core Haswell | 4th generation Intel Core processors |
| AMD Ryzen Zen | First-generation Zen processors: Ryzen 1000 desktop processors, Ryzen 2000G desktop APUs and Ryzen 2000U/H laptop processors |
| NVIDIA GeForce GTX 10 series | GTX 1050 to GTX 1080 Ti; the minimum also needs 4 GB of video memory |
| AMD RDNA 1 | Radeon RX 5000 series cards |
| Intel Iris Xe2-LPG Lunar Lake | Integrated graphics of Intel Core Ultra 200V laptop processors |
| Intel Core Ultra (Series 2) | Intel Core Ultra 200 series processors |
| AMD Ryzen Zen 5 | Ryzen 9000 desktop and Ryzen AI 300 laptop processors |
| NVIDIA GeForce RTX 40 series | RTX 4060 to RTX 4090 desktop cards and RTX 4050 to RTX 4090 laptop GPUs; the recommended specs also need 8 GB of video memory |
| AMD RDNA 3 | Radeon RX 7000 series cards |
| Intel Arc B-Series | Intel Arc B-series cards such as the B570 and B580 |
WoW Forever vs Midnight requirements
The same shop page also lists World of Warcraft: Midnight, the modern game. The two lists are identical except for two lines:
| Forever | Midnight | |
|---|---|---|
| Windows minimum processor | 4 cores, 3.0 GHz: Intel Core Haswell or AMD Ryzen Zen | 6 cores, 4.0 GHz boost clock: Intel Core Coffee Lake or AMD Ryzen Zen 2 |
| Mac minimum graphics | Metal capable, 4 GB: Apple M2 (8 GB) | Metal capable, 4 GB: Apple M2 (8 GB) or AMD RDNA 1 (4 GB) |
| Every other line | Identical, including the whole recommended list | Identical |
So on paper a Windows PC that meets Midnight’s minimum also meets Forever’s, and both games ask for the same recommended hardware.
Install size: how much space WoW Forever takes
The 128 GB on the spec list is the free space Blizzard asks for, not the size of the game, and Blizzard hasn’t published a download size. The numbers below come from players who started the beta install early on September 16, a day before the beta’s September 17 start:
- Blizzard asks for
- 128 GB
- free space on an SSD
- Beta installer
- 69 GB
- “required”, in a player’s screenshot
- No other WoW installed
- 65–66 GB
- player reports
- Other WoW versions installed
- 14.11–15.10 GB
- player reports
These are beta numbers from Reddit and the Blizzard forums, not from Blizzard, and patches will change them. Players with other WoW versions on the drive downloaded far less; they say Battle.net reuses the files the versions share. Beta dates and who gets in: WoW Forever release date and beta.
How to check if your PC can run it
- Windows version, processor and RAM: Settings → System → About.
- Graphics card and its memory: Task Manager → Performance → GPU shows the card and its dedicated GPU memory. The DirectX Diagnostic Tool (
dxdiag) lists them on its Display tab. - SSD or hard drive: Task Manager → Performance → Disk shows the drive type.
- Mac: Apple menu → About This Mac shows the chip, memory and macOS version.
No install needed to plan your character: the WoW Forever talent calculator runs in your browser.
WoW Forever system requirements FAQ
What are the minimum system requirements for WoW Forever?
On Windows: Windows 10 64-bit, a 4-core 3.0 GHz processor (Intel Core Haswell or AMD Ryzen Zen), a DirectX 12 GPU with 4 GB (GeForce GTX 10 series, AMD RDNA 1 or Intel Lunar Lake graphics), 8 GB RAM and an SSD with 128 GB free. On Mac: macOS 12 with an Apple M2 (8 GB) or a 9th generation Intel Core.
What are the recommended specs?
Windows 11, 8 performance cores at 5.2 GHz (Intel Core Ultra Series 2 or AMD Ryzen Zen 5), an 8 GB GPU (GeForce RTX 40 series, AMD RDNA 3 or Intel Arc B-Series), 16 GB RAM and the same 128 GB SSD. On Mac: macOS 15 on an Apple M4 with 16 GB.
Can I play WoW Forever on a Mac?
Yes. Mac is listed next to Windows on the Battle.net shop page, from macOS 12 with an Apple M2 at minimum to macOS 15 with an Apple M4 recommended.
Will WoW Forever run on an M1 Mac?
Blizzard hasn’t said. The lowest Apple chip on its list is the M2 with 8 GB, and the M1 isn’t named. A Mac below the minimum isn’t promised to work.
Do I need an SSD for WoW Forever?
Yes. Both the minimum and the recommended specs ask for a solid state drive with 128 GB of available space. A hard drive isn’t on either list.
How big is the WoW Forever download?
Blizzard hasn’t published a size. Players who installed the beta early report 65–66 GB with no other WoW version on the drive (the installer said 69 GB required in one screenshot), and about 14.11–15.10 GB when another WoW version (Classic or retail) was already installed. Launch and patches will change that.
Why does it ask for 128 GB if the game is smaller?
Blizzard doesn’t explain the number. It is free space on the drive, not the game size, and the same page asks Midnight players for the same 128 GB.
Is a GTX 1060 enough for WoW Forever?
The minimum names the GeForce GTX 10 series with 4 GB of video memory. On paper the 6 GB GTX 1060 meets that and the 3 GB version falls short; the recommended specs ask for an 8 GB RTX 40 series card.
Can I play WoW Forever on a laptop?
Yes, if it meets the list. The Windows minimum names Intel’s Lunar Lake integrated graphics, and on Mac an M2 with 8 GB is the minimum. Other integrated graphics aren’t named.
Does WoW Forever run on Windows 10?
Yes. The minimum is Windows 10 64-bit with the May 2019 Update or newer. Windows 11 is only in the recommended specs.
Does WoW Forever need a better PC than retail WoW?
Not on Windows. The same shop page lists World of Warcraft: Midnight with the same recommended specs, and Midnight’s Windows minimum asks for a stronger processor (6 cores, 4.0 GHz) than Forever’s. On Mac, Forever’s minimum graphics line names only the Apple M2, while Midnight’s also names AMD RDNA 1 (4 GB) for Intel Macs.
Why does a Classic-style game need a modern PC?
Blizzard hasn’t explained the specs. What it has shown: in the Evolving a Timeless World panel at BlizzCon, it presented new volumetric fog, a longer view distance, global illumination with its own ray tracer, and new water for Forever. Separately, and only about the interface, Blizzard said in the WoW UI Discord, as quoted by Wowhead, that Forever shares Mainline WoW’s UI architecture, including the vast majority of its addon APIs.
Does WoW Forever have ray tracing?
Yes. In the Evolving a Timeless World panel, lead software engineer Jason Scott said Blizzard made its own ray tracer for the new lighting, built for the recommended hardware and optimized to run on the minimum hardware too, so every player gets it.
Can I play WoW Forever with a controller?
Blizzard announced official gamepad support. Wowhead reported that the BlizzCon demo stations had Xbox controllers, which worked for the level 1–10 Skyborne experience but not the dungeon demo. The shop page still lists keyboard and mouse as the minimum input.
Can I play WoW Forever on Linux or Steam Deck?
Blizzard lists only Windows and Mac and hasn’t mentioned Linux or Steam Deck. One Reddit commenter said the early beta install worked on Linux, without saying how.
Can I play WoW Forever on GeForce Now or another cloud gaming service?
Blizzard hasn’t said. The Battle.net shop page lists only Windows and Mac and names no cloud service, and we haven’t found any Blizzard statement about GeForce Now for Forever.
Still unconfirmed
- The download size at launch (the beta numbers are player reports)
- Whether Macs with an Apple M1 run the game
- Cloud gaming, such as GeForce Now
- Linux and Steam Deck support
- Which graphics quality settings each hardware tier can run
- Whether the requirements change before launch
