WoW Forever Classic Mode and Appearance Settings

World of Warcraft: Forever lets you decide how Azeroth looks: with transmog or without it, with modern HD character models or the original SD ones. Classic Mode is the choice you get the first time you log in, and it turns other players’ transmog off. In Blizzard’s words from a short it posted, you can “adventure with visible transmogs on OR play like it doesn’t exist at all.”

Compiled from Blizzard’s Deep Dive and What’s Next panels (the videos and the written recaps) and its posts; anything else names its source in the sentence. The beta is on, so settings and names can change before launch. Last reviewed: .

What WoW Forever Classic Mode does

The first time you log in, a mode selector asks how you want to play. On the Deep Dive panel, Blizzard described each mode as a preset of a handful of settings, any of which you can reconfigure later. If you pick Classic Mode, the visibility of other players’ transmog is disabled as soon as you enter the game; the written recap says transmog is disabled automatically. The goal, in the panel’s words, is to let you play as if transmog does not exist at all.

Blizzard hasn’t listed the other settings in the preset. Its recaps name “modern and Classic visual presets” next to the HD and SD model options, but they don’t say whether picking Classic Mode also switches you to the SD models. Wowhead’s Deep Dive liveblog wrote that you can change your mode later at an in-game NPC; in the panel video, the NPC is for turning transmog off, and the preset’s settings are changed one by one afterwards.

The transmog toggle

Transmog wasn’t in the original game, and Blizzard says outlandish outfits can break immersion for some players, so in Forever it is opt-in. Switch it off and you see everyone around you as they really are, in their equipped gear. Switch it on and you see your own and other players’ transmog.

  • Off still collects. While transmog is off, new gear still adds its appearance to your collection, in case you turn it on later.
  • Off still lets you style yourself. You can hide a slot such as your helm or cloak, or show a particular appearance on yourself, without switching the whole system on.
  • Hidden helms stay hidden. With transmog off, you still see other players’ hidden helm and cloak settings, as in the original game.
  • Bought outfits are optional too. The transmog sets in the Skyborne packs, such as the Shen’dorei Skyseer’s Garb, can be used in Forever and in modern WoW; wearing them is up to you like any other look. What each pack includes: WoW Forever editions.

Transmog rules in WoW Forever

For players who use it, transmog works much like in modern WoW, with Classic-minded limits meant to keep each character’s silhouette true to its gear and level.

  • Same armor type. Plate transmogs only to plate and cloth only to cloth: a Paladin in a cloth robe needs another cloth chest. A saved outfit can hold a different armor type per slot, so it still works when you equip an upgrade of another type.
  • Looks match your level. Low-level characters can’t use high-level appearances; “we want your silhouette to be relative to your level,” Blizzard said. At level 60 the level limits go away. Cosmetic-only items are the exception, and they will be rare.
  • No rolling for looks in dungeons. A bind-on-pickup green or blue item from a dungeon gives its appearance to every eligible looter, so nobody needs to roll just for the look.
  • Raid epics stay personal. Their appearance goes only to the player the item binds to. Grey and white items give theirs as soon as they are looted.
  • PvP looks need the rank. PvP gear still requires the rank it asks for before you can use its appearance.

HD or SD character models

On the What’s Next panel, Blizzard said the character models are toggleable game-wide: your character, the NPCs and other players are shown together in HD or in SD. SD means the original Classic designs; HD is the newer modern models. Blizzard then showed an HD Dwarf running with the modern animations and again with the Classic animation set, and said it had restored the Classic animations across the HD character models.

In the September 17 Live Q&A, as Wowhead reported it, Blizzard said the HD models are there so that players who aren’t Classic diehards enjoy the game too, while Classic players have the SD models; that HD and SD models share the same skeletons; and that the race animations were updated while keeping the Classic feel, so the toggle can work.

How much the toggle covers is still argued over by players. Wowhead’s What’s Next liveblog described the world as switchable too; Blizzard’s recap and the panel video only talk about character models. Blizzard hasn’t shown where the setting sits in the options.

The barbershop

According to Wowhead, going by MrGM’s notes from the BlizzCon demo, Forever has a barbershop: you can change body type, hairstyle and more, with what looked like the same options as character creation, and randomize. The HD models can be toggled there to see yourself either way. Stormwind’s was the one confirmed; the other capitals likely have one too, and whether it costs gold wasn’t confirmed. On Blizzard’s first list of beta known issues, barber chairs caused a Lua error.

WoW Forever Classic Mode FAQ

What is Classic Mode in WoW Forever?

One of the modes you can pick the first time you log in. It is a preset of a handful of settings, and choosing it turns off other players’ transmog as soon as you enter the world.

Can I change Classic Mode later?

Yes. Blizzard said every setting in the preset can be reconfigured later, and you can switch transmog on or off at a transmogrifier.

Can I turn off transmog in WoW Forever?

Yes. Visit a transmogrifier in certain cities and disable the system, or pick Classic Mode at first login. You then see everyone in the gear they really wear.

Do I still collect appearances with transmog off?

Yes. New gear still adds its appearance, so it is there if you turn transmog on later.

Does Classic Mode turn on the SD models?

Blizzard hasn’t said. It has only confirmed that Classic Mode turns transmog off, and it lists the HD or SD choice as an option of its own.

Can I use the original character models?

Yes. You can show the original SD models or the modern HD ones, and the choice covers your character, NPCs and other players together.

Do the HD models have the old animations?

Yes. Blizzard restored the Classic animations across the HD character models and showed an HD Dwarf running with them.

Can a warrior wear a cloth robe look?

No. Transmog keeps the armor type, so plate only takes plate appearances and cloth only cloth.

Can I use high-level appearances while leveling?

No. High-level looks unlock for use at level 60; cosmetic-only items, which will be rare, are the exception.

Is there a barbershop in WoW Forever?

Yes, according to Wowhead’s report of the BlizzCon demo: Stormwind has one where you can change body type and hair. Whether it costs gold isn’t confirmed.
