WoW Forever vs Classic

World of Warcraft: Forever is Blizzard’s new, permanent version of original Azeroth: level 60, the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, new zones, dungeons and raids, a new race and reworked classes. Here is what it is, and what is different from WoW Classic.

From Blizzard’s announcement, panel recaps and interviews unless marked otherwise; anything seen only in the BlizzCon demo can change in the beta. Talent counts currently come from the BlizzCon 2026 demo data behind our calculator; they change when it is rebuilt from the beta client. Last reviewed: .

What is WoW Forever?

World of Warcraft: Forever is a new World of Warcraft game set in original Azeroth. Blizzard calls it a permanent home alongside modern WoW and Classic, and its panel recap is clear about what it is not: “not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic.” For years players called the idea Classic+, and Ion Hazzikostas nodded to that debate on stage.

The story takes place after Warcraft III Reforged: Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core, in “Year 1” of Azeroth, before Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal. Blizzard says Forever sits in its own “time bubble”, so the team can explore new stories without disrupting original Azeroth’s foundational stories.

The level cap is 60 and stays there. Rather than moving on to Outland, Forever grows inside the original world: 1000+ new quests, new zones and dungeons, new raids from Dec 9, and later Hardcore, a revamped iconic raid and major spring and summer updates on Blizzard’s roadmap.

On the panel, Blizzard explained how it got here: in 2020 the Classic team was built to restore the old game, not to add to it; Season of Discovery tested how far changes could go; and by the middle of 2024 the team was sure a permanent version could work, because players wanted a forever home rather than another temporary season.

Blizzard models the class changes on its 2005–06 talent reworks: cover each class’s gaps without erasing what makes it unique, and trade small +1% talents for ones you can feel. Trees keep their rows and their one-point talents at 11, 21 and 31 points, and gain a new one at 16. Talents that gave key group buffs, such as Divine Spirit, Blessing of Kings and Improved Mark of the Wild, are now baseline. Every class has a page of its changes, and the new trees are in our talent calculator.

Combat itself stays close to Classic: an ordinary monster takes about 10–15 seconds to kill alone, and dungeons still call for crowd control and careful threat.

The Skyborne are a new elf race. The Alliance’s High Order Skyborne can be Mages and the Horde’s Windshapers can be Shamans; both can be Warriors, Hunters, Rogues and Druids, but not Paladins, and playing one needs the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher. The original races gain 6 combinations: Dwarf Shaman, Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin. Every race’s racials are reworked into two active and two passive abilities; see all races.

New zones, dungeons and raids

  • 4 new zones. Mount Hyjal, Shen’dralas, The Riverglades and Zephras Isle, the Skyborne starting zone for levels 1–12. See the zones.
  • New quests in old zones. Starting zones, the Wetlands and Desolace get new quests, and Blizzard told GameSpot that new content starts showing up from level 5.
  • 9 new dungeons, from the Hall of Thanes (levels 13–18) to the Shaper’s Terrace (58–60). Dungeon monsters give much less experience than in Classic and dungeon quests much more, Blizzard told The Sun.
  • New raids from Dec 9: the Barrow Deeps for 10 players and Hyjal Summit for 20, opening alongside 40-player Onyxia’s Lair. The designers told Kotaku there is no flexible raid size, but every tier will have at least a 10-player and a 20-player raid.
  • PvP: the Darkspear Islands, a new 15v15 battleground, and all the original battlegrounds. Tim Jones told Kotaku that Honor takes you up to rank 14 within a season or patch cycle.

Transmog in WoW Forever

Transmog was not part of the original game, and Blizzard says outlandish outfits can break immersion for some players. So in Forever it is opt-in: collect and customize, or play as if it does not exist.

  • On or off. A transmogrifier in certain cities sets your outfits or switches the system off. With it off, everyone around you shows the gear they really wear.
  • Classic Mode turns it off. Choosing Classic Mode the first time you launch the game disables transmog when you enter the world.
  • You keep collecting. New gear still adds its appearance while transmog is off, in case you turn it on later.
  • Dungeon drops don’t cause loot fights. A bind-on-pickup green or blue item from a dungeon gives its appearance to every eligible looter, so nobody needs to roll just for the look.
  • Raid epics stay personal. Their appearance goes only to the player the item binds to. Grey and white items give theirs as soon as they are looted.
  • Classic-minded rules. Plate only takes plate looks and cloth only cloth, and high-level appearances unlock for use at level 60. Cosmetic-only items will be rare.
  • Helm and cloak. With transmog off you can still hide your helm or cloak or show a chosen look on yourself, and you still see other players’ hidden helms and cloaks.
  • PvP looks. According to Wowhead’s Deep Dive liveblog, PvP gear appearances still need the matching rank.

Classic Mode and HD or SD character models

Blizzard lists the visual choices as modern and Classic visual presets, High-Definition (HD) or Standard-Definition (SD) character models, and the original Classic animations restored for the HD models.

On the What’s Next panel, Blizzard said the model choice applies game-wide: your character, NPCs and other players all show in HD, or all in SD. The written recap only mentions character models, while Wowhead’s liveblog described the world as switchable too. Players are still arguing over how much the toggle really changes, and Blizzard hasn’t said more.

Classic Mode is one of the presets offered when you first log in, and choosing it turns other players’ transmog off. On the Deep Dive panel Blizzard said each preset sets a handful of settings, any of which you can change later; it hasn’t listed which settings those are.

The world itself also gets new graphics technology. According to MMO-Champion’s notes from the Evolving a Timeless World panel, the team works from the original 1.12 client and adds volumetric fog, longer view distances, shadows that follow the sun, global illumination, ray tracing that runs even on minimum specs, and new water.

What stays the same as Classic

  • No flying, no level scaling, and a world that is meant to stay dangerous.
  • Combat pace: about 10–15 seconds per ordinary monster, with crowd control and threat still mattering in dungeons.
  • Weapon skill works as it always has; items just give less of it.
  • Talent trees keep their rows and their 11, 21 and 31-point talents, and some talents are exactly as in patch 1.12.
  • Abilities still have ranks, and there are still two primary and three secondary professions.
  • The leveling curve: the total experience to reach 60 is unchanged, Blizzard told The Sun.
  • Factions: Horde and Alliance still can’t group.
  • Class limits: Paladins, for example, still have no interrupt.

WoW Forever vs Classic FAQ

What is WoW Forever?

A new, permanent version of World of Warcraft set in original Azeroth at level 60, with new zones, dungeons and raids, a new race and reworked classes. It launches Nov 4, 2026, and is included with a WoW subscription.

Is WoW Forever the same as WoW Classic?

No. Classic restores the original game; Forever starts from it and changes it, with new content, reworked classes and talents, transmog, Legacy, Camping and rulesets instead of realms. Blizzard’s recap calls it “not a mode, a season, or a new version of Classic.”

Is WoW Forever Classic+?

It is Blizzard’s take on the idea players called Classic+: original Azeroth kept at level 60, with new content. On stage, Ion Hazzikostas mentioned the online debate over what Classic Plus should be, but the official name is World of Warcraft: Forever.

Does WoW Forever replace WoW Classic?

No. At BlizzCon Blizzard called Forever its new, third World of Warcraft experience, alongside Modern and Classic.

Do I need to buy WoW Forever?

No. Forever is included with a WoW subscription or Game Time. The Skyborne race and its starting zone need the Skyborne Heroic Pack or higher; the packs are compared on the release date page.

Can I transfer my Classic characters to WoW Forever?

No transfer has been announced. Asked whether characters leveled in Classic would move over, Blizzard’s Reddit account answered “It will be fresh servers,” and Blizzard told Destin that everyone starts at level 1 at launch.

Will WoW Forever go past level 60?

No. Blizzard says the cap stays at 60 and the game grows with new content in the original world instead. On the same panel it said nothing is off the table, not even a new class.

Is WoW Forever the same as Season of Discovery?

No. Blizzard calls Season of Discovery an experiment that pushed boundaries on purpose. Players told Blizzard they wanted a forever home rather than a temporary season, and Forever is that home, not a season.

Does WoW Forever have transmog, and can I turn it off?

Yes to both. Transmog is opt-in: switch it off at a transmogrifier, or pick Classic Mode at first launch, and you see everyone’s real gear. Details are in the transmog section.

Can I play with the original character models?

Yes. HD and the original SD models are both available, and on the panel Blizzard said the choice covers your character, NPCs and other players alike. The HD models can use the restored Classic animations.

Does WoW Forever have flying mounts?

No. Blizzard ruled out flying mounts and level scaling, and the world is meant to stay dangerous. Finding groups for dungeons is covered on the dungeons page.

Is there a WoW Token or a paid boost in WoW Forever?

Clay Stone told Destin that Blizzard has no plans for a WoW Token or a boost. That is “no plans”, not a permanent promise.

Do Classic addons work in WoW Forever?

Forever uses modern WoW’s UI architecture, and Blizzard says the addon restrictions introduced in Midnight apply to Forever too, including limits on automated combat addons. Which addons will be ready at launch isn’t known yet.

Is WoW Forever on console or mobile?

No console or mobile version has been announced. The Battle.net shop lists Windows and Mac, the game needs the Battle.net desktop app, and Blizzard has announced official controller support.

How different are the talents from Classic?

Very. Our talent data, from the BlizzCon demo until it is rebuilt from the beta, has 470 talents to Classic’s 432, with 143 new talents and 15 new 31-point talents. Compare every tree in the talent calculator.

Is WoW Forever a new timeline?

In a way. Forever starts in “Year 1” of Azeroth, before Kazzak reopened the Dark Portal, and Blizzard says it sits in its own “time bubble”: new stories, characters and conflicts that don’t disrupt original Azeroth’s foundational stories. They are set in the original world, not in the Outland or Northrend of later expansions.

When does WoW Forever come out?

Nov 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. PST, with the beta from Sep 17. See the launch time in your time zone.
