A new build with patch notes from Blizzard: 81 changes below, in our own words.

  • Bug fixesClassic looting is back: a creature that dropped nothing can still be clicked.
  • Bug fixesVisual effects no longer flicker on large creatures.
  • Bug fixesFixed creature behavior that could pull enemies from far away.
  • Dungeons & raidsNew dungeon open for testing: City of Dalaran.
  • Systems & UISeveral weapons can be swapped inside one global cooldown again, for example a macro from a two-hander to sword and shield.
  • Dungeons & raidsExperience from killing creatures in dungeons is up by about 20%.
  • Dungeons & raidsParty experience for lower-level enemies is counted from your own level again, as in Classic Era, not from the highest-level member. If someone is far above the enemy, nobody gets experience, as before.
  • Systems & UICooldown Manager: every class, racial abilities and trinkets are supported now. Consumables come in a later patch.
  • Systems & UIGamepad: the gamepad action bar is part of Edit Mode, and its settings (the compact bar among them) moved there from the options menu. They are not carried over: set them again. Edit Mode layouts are saved per interface type.
  • Systems & UIGamepad: a new indicator for hold actions, the map opens on the Quest Log so you can keep running, raid frame navigation is updated, and inputs no longer stop working after looting.
  • Systems & UIEvery beta player has been granted the Legacy Challenge: 16 Legacy Points to try the whole system.
  • Systems & UIThe cheapest Legacy reset costs 1 silver, and the price falls by one reset per hour. Beta only, like the talent reset price.
  • WarriorDruidRage from damage taken: three calculation bugs fixed (it read your own health instead of an expected creature’s, mishandled critical and crushing blows, and counted absorbs wrongly). Blizzard: “The typical Warrior or Druid should be gaining more Rage from taking damage.”
  • WarriorRage gains were tuned for a Warrior with 50% Armor, a tank’s value. They are now tuned for 20% to 40%, by level, which fits a questing Warrior.
  • DruidMana Potions can be used in Bear, Dire Bear and Cat Form (bug fix).
  • DruidBuffExtra Rage from landing a critical strike: 100% (was 75%).
  • DruidNerfThorns: base damage back to the original WoW values, and the spell power ratio drops to 6% (was 13.3%).
  • DruidCat Form no longer lowers your maximum health (bug fix).
  • DruidBuffBear Form and Dire Bear Form: threat bonus 50% (was 30%).
  • DruidEffects that replace a shapeshift form’s look work more like Classic: far fewer do it now, mostly those with another benefit (Noggenfogger Elixir still transforms you).
  • DruidDemoralizing Roar puts threat on every target it hits. It generated none.
  • DruidWrath: ranks 1 to 5 retuned so ranks 1 to 6 grow evenly and each new rank is an upgrade.
  • DruidBuffPredatory Instincts is renamed Natural Instinct and also raises spell healing by 12/25% of Intellect.
  • DruidShifting Power can no longer be used at full Energy.
  • DruidThick Hide is rebuilt in code, which fixes it not applying when gear is equipped while shapeshifted.
  • HunterBuffDisengage: the threat reduction is doubled. It was meant to be earlier and had been missed.
  • HunterHunter pets no longer gain health over and over at low health (bug fix).
  • HunterUnleashed Fury now really increases your pet’s damage.
  • HunterImproved Concussive Shot has the correct chance to trigger.
  • HunterImproved Wing Clip has the correct chance to trigger, and a lower one with ranks far below your level.
  • HunterBuffExpose Prey lasts 10 seconds (was 5).
  • HunterEntrapment has diminishing returns and triggers only when Frost Trap first goes off, not on its later pulses.
  • MageImpact no longer triggers from Flamestrike’s periodic damage.
  • MageFrostbolt and Fireball ranks 1 to 5 and Arcane Missiles ranks 1 to 3 retuned, so the early ranks grow evenly and each new rank is an upgrade.
  • PaladinRetribution Aura uses the Paladin’s spell power, not the struck target’s (bug fix).
  • PaladinNerfRetribution Aura: base damage back to the original WoW values, about 33% less, and the spell power ratio drops to 6% (was 13.3%).
  • PaladinNerfReckoning can trigger at most once every 1.5 seconds.
  • PaladinSeal of Fury no longer returns Mana without the Improved Seal of Fury talent (bug fix).
  • PaladinMana restored by Improved Seal of Fury and Shield Specialization no longer generates threat. Tanking Paladins were making more threat than intended.
  • PriestSmite ranks 1 to 4, Lesser Heal ranks 1 to 3 and Heal ranks 1 to 2 retuned, so each new rank is an upgrade.
  • PriestNerfPenance: damage and healing reduced. It had been counted as a 3-second channel; it is a 2-second one.
  • PriestPenance: Mana costs changed so it stays more efficient than Heal and Greater Heal. Rank 1 costs 50% more.
  • PriestBuffPenance: ranks 2 and 4 heal for more.
  • ShamanFlametongue Totem uses a shapeshifted target’s attack speed instead of the speed of the weapon it has equipped.
  • ShamanLightning Bolt: ranks 1 to 5 retuned so ranks 1 to 6 grow evenly and each new rank is an upgrade.
  • ShamanElemental Focus is no longer triggered and used up at once by Fire Nova.
  • ShamanWater Shield’s tooltip shows the Mana it restores and no longer names a 15-second cooldown it never had. Mana Tide Totem shows its pulse again.
  • WarlockA Warlock’s current pet is stunned while a new one is being summoned.
  • WarlockShadow Bolt: ranks 1 to 4 retuned so ranks 1 to 5 grow evenly and each new rank is an upgrade.
  • WarlockDemonic Brand: the pet’s bonus damage causes high threat only when it is Shadow damage.
  • WarriorDemoralizing Shout puts threat on every target it hits. It generated none.
  • WarriorDeep Wounds is required for Impale again.
  • WarriorDeep Wounds no longer scales with attack power for the off-hand weapon (bug fix). It doesn’t scale with attack power at all.
  • WarriorLast Stand grants the right amount of health (bug fix).
  • ItemsShoulder pieces of the new armor sets are drawn at the correct, smaller size.
  • DruidWolfshead Helm gives 5 extra Energy when Shifting Power is used. Its Rage effect is unchanged.
  • ItemsVarious dungeon quest rewards go from Rare to Uncommon, with stats to match.
  • HunterThe Truthseeker’s Bow (Greater Friend of the Library) requires level 40, like the chain’s other two rewards.
  • ItemsTransformative Cocoon counts as a debuff. The Revelation enchant’s buff survives shifting into Ghost Wolf or a Druid form. Booty Bay Bruiser’s Buckshot no longer knocks back.
  • ProfessionsVendor prices of Enchanting-made items are reset: Minor Wizard Oil sells for 1 silver, the ten crafted wands for 5 copper (Novice’s Practice Wand) up to 25 silver (Greater Eternal Wand). The Peace Tea recipe sells for 10 copper.
  • ItemsSixteen rewards of the new Gelkis and Magram quests in Desolace are retuned, most of them only in power. A later hotfix makes them require level 35.
  • ItemsDamage from Discolored Healing Potions no longer breaks crowd control.
  • PvPCritical strikes in PvP are no longer weakened.
  • PvPThe Shipwreck Cove capture point appears where it should.
  • ProfessionsArmor Kits that grant Attack Power no longer give twice as much Ranged Attack Power.
  • DruidEnchant Weapon - Recovery works for shapeshifted Druids.
  • Systems & UIWill of the Forsaken can always be used while asleep or charmed (bug fix).
  • Quests & world“Blood Tithe” can be started again after certain other quests. The Night Watchman’s Torch shows its aura only on the bearer.
  • Quests & worldCapital city barbers are replaced by local barbers.
  • Quests & worldDesolace: the new Gelkis and Magram quests that start with “Valley of Bones” need level 35 (was 30).
  • Quests & worldTirisfal Glades: quests and creatures around Shadowvale and Bandarion Keep are higher level, since they were lower than the content before them.
  • Quests & worldDuskwood: Stitches is hostile again on his way into Darkshire.
  • Dungeons & raidsExcavation Site: Wetlands: the Titan Relic from “Elder Knowledge” or “Lost Relic Carry” is handed back for the follow-up quests, so you don’t need a second one.
  • Quests & worldSingle quests fixed or eased in the Barrens, Dun Morogh, Durotar, Hillsbrad Foothills, Loch Modan, Mulgore, Orgrimmar, Redridge Mountains, Stonetalon Mountains and Teldrassil: faster respawns, map markers, quest items that are no longer used up.
  • RogueRogue quest “Plundering the Plunderers” has map markers.
  • ShamanShaman quest “Storm, Earth, and Fire”: its creatures respawn faster and drop the twisted totems more often, from more sources. The Eye of the Tempest for “Heed My Call” drops for every party member.
  • WarriorWarrior quest “Ulag the Cleaver”: the Mausoleum Trigger reactivates quickly.
  • Systems & UIVoice chat can use Discord Voice (Audio settings; the party leader’s setting counts for the party), and a Group Finder posting can name a voice mode its members are prompted to join.
  • Systems & UIThe Inspect window is updated, and View Talents is a new option under Inspect in the target frame’s menu.
  • Systems & UIQuest types are shown as text in the Quest Log, tracker and dialogue; the tracker shows quest level requirements.
  • Systems & UIInterface: new combo point art, buffed stats are highlighted again, Specific Macros no longer shows General Macros, an earned Legacy Challenge opens its window on click, and the Character Info pane shows level and class.

Not in Blizzard’s notes

  • Spearing Strike’s tooltip now says a mounted target is dismounted.
  • Furor’s text is rewritten with the same numbers and now says Bear Form and Dire Bear Form give up the stored Energy. Whether it works differently isn’t stated.
  • Thick Hide’s tooltip now reads its armor from your level; the notes only say the talent was rebuilt.
  • Several fixes in the notes leave no trace in the client’s talent data (same text, numbers and tree spot): Shifting Power at full Energy, Improved Wing Clip, Improved Concussive Shot, Entrapment, Unleashed Fury, Impact, Elemental Focus, Last Stand and Improved Seal of Fury. They are server-side or scripted.

Server hotfixes on this build

  • First listed October 9 (UTC): four pushes that touch spell tables. One re-sends the trigger row of the Rogue talent Cold Blood with the values the client already has; two change creature spells (Rend Flesh, Highland Venom) and a quest spell (Sacred Cleansing); one sets a flag on the two damage-over-time effects of a discolored healing potion. No talent and no trainer ability changed, and Blizzard posted nothing about them.

  • Systems & UITouch of the Grave no longer breaks crowd control and no longer triggers from spells without a damage part (Polymorph, Distract, Pick Pocket). Shadow Word: Pain triggers it on cast, not on its periodic damage.
  • Systems & UICooldown Manager: off by default (Options, Gameplay Enhancement). Druid, Mage, Priest, Warrior and Warlock can test it; spell ranks aren’t supported yet. Blizzard asks which spells you want tracked by default.
  • Systems & UIGamepad: class flyouts on the action bar (Druid forms, Hunter and Warlock pet controls, Paladin auras, Warrior stances), and the pet bar no longer replaces the bottom gamepad bar.
  • Systems & UIGamepad: new options (a compact action bar, fixed party targeting, swapped target modifier and action sides), Edit Mode layouts apply with the gamepad interface, and updated map, quest log and raid frame support.
  • ItemsA handful of guns and bows that didn’t use ammunition correctly are fixed.
  • ItemsA number of quest rewards get the correct item level, and a few early caster rewards are adjusted.
  • ItemsWizard Oils return to their Classic Era values: Minor 8, Lesser 16 and Wizard Oil 24 spell power. Brilliant Wizard Oil is unchanged.
  • ItemsWands no longer gain damage from the user’s spell damage.
  • Dungeons & raidsSeveral dungeon quests could be shared, which gave the receiver a quest item. They can’t anymore.
  • Quests & worldDalaran: faction adjustments, and creatures now spawn just outside the city entrance.
  • Quests & worldElwynn Forest: faster respawns for the Crystal Lake murlocs, Shinyfinder Narf and Nimsy; more crates for “Stolen Enchanting Supplies”; “Book Return” takes the extra Book Bag; the candles are gone from Jasperlode and Fargodeep Mine, which were deadlier than intended for solo players; Mother Fang respawns more slowly.
  • Quests & worldSingle quests fixed or eased in Dun Morogh, Durotar, Mulgore, Silverpine Forest, Undercity and Westfall. In Teldrassil, “Bounty: Gnarlpine Furbolg” asks for 15 (was 20).
  • Quests & worldZephras Isle: the High Order Skyborne quest “Catching Wind” is redesigned, and “Wounds of Betrayal” and “A Firm Response” give credit properly.
  • Quests & worldSilithus: Khonsu’s arrival is removed from the beta and will return later.
  • Systems & UIInterface: an updated nameplate selection display and new Personal Resource Display textures.

Not in Blizzard’s notes

  • The Retribution Paladin talent Crusade was removed from the tree in this build. The notes name only the other removed talent, Improved Holy Strike.
  • In this build’s client data Bastion and Focused Rage were still in their old spots. The swap reached the client data with the October hotfix.

When is the next update?

What the changes mean for your class

Pick a class above to keep its notes and the general ones. For the whole picture of a class against Classic, and to try a changed talent in a build:

How this page is put together

  • Blizzard’s notes. Blizzard posts its beta patch notes as replies in one forum topic, the Development Notes. Each reply is one update here, rewritten line by line in our own words and tagged by class and category. Lines that say the same thing for a family of spells or a group of quests are one item. A Buff or Nerf tag is set only where the numbers leave no doubt.
  • Updates without notes. The client also updates between those posts. For each such build we give the moment the public build list first showed it and what its file comparison held, so “did anything change?” has an answer.
  • Beyond the notes. Each build’s talent data is compared with the one before on the talent data updates page; what that comparison finds and the notes don’t say is listed under the update. Server hotfixes have no notes at all: they are read from the public hotfix list.
  • Where to go next. The WoW Forever beta page tracks access, the level cap and what to test; the WoW Forever talent calculator always runs on the newest data.

Not confirmed

  • When the next build arrives: Blizzard has announced no schedule.
  • Server hotfixes are read from a public list polled by third parties; Blizzard has posted nothing about them, and which regions they reached isn’t shown.
  • A build without notes can still change things the file comparison doesn’t show, such as server-side scripts.
