Library Books Return in WoW Forever, for Every Class

The books scattered around Azeroth that gave Mages runes in Season of Discovery can be collected by every class in the Forever beta: 10 books earn a choice of two necks, 20 a choice of two rings, and all four rewards are new items in the beta client.

The rewards

Books are turned in at your faction’s library. Players in the beta found two quests, reported by Warcraft Tavern on September 23; each lets you choose one of two rewards, shown on the cards above with the quest and the books it takes. The items and their stats are read from the beta client’s own item table (build 1.60.1.69913), where all four are new: the Classic Era client doesn’t have them.

The libraries are next to the Mage portal trainers: Garion Wendell in the Mage Tower of Stormwind (/way 49.0 86.4) for the Alliance and Owen Thadd in the Magic Quarter of the Undercity (/way 74.0 32.4) for the Horde, according to Wowhead’s beta guide of September 28. Wowhead also found a level 20 Paladin who had collected all 20 books.

The two rings are rare and the two necks uncommon, all bind on pickup. The October 1 beta build (1.60.1.70170) lowered them: the necks were rare at item level 25 with twice the stats, and the rings item level 40. The same build opened Field Researcher’s Loop to every class; it was a Rogue-only ring before, so at 20 books anyone now picks between the two.

Mages: the Research profession

Warcraft Tavern also reports that Mages who complete the collection learn a profession called Research, which lets them Study: turn Light Feathers into spell scrolls, on a one-hour cooldown. Blizzard hadn’t described it then.

Wowhead’s guide of September 28 tells it differently: a Mage learns Study with the first book handed in; it goes with Decipher Scrolls, taught by the trainer at level 6, and standing in the library it turns a Light Feather into a bundle of scrolls once a day. The scrolls seen so far are Minor Evocation, Rat Familiar, Imbue Lesser Flame, Comprehension and Imbue Chillknife. In Wowhead’s test the ability misbehaved on the beta.

Blizzard’s October 1 beta notes are its first word on the system: every Mage scroll from Comprehension had another balance pass and can no longer be cast while moving, and a known issue of that build can keep a Mage who learned Research from opening it.

What this means for you

  • Pick up books while you level. The two neck choices at item level 23 are early-game upgrades, and the item level 35 rings last longer.
  • Casters want 20 books. Philanthropist’s Ring adds Intellect and Spell Power; Field Researcher’s Loop, with Agility and Stamina, is the pick for melee classes and Hunters.
  • It’s beta data. Rewards and counts can change before launch on November 4.
